After the completion of every rodeo season, some competitors are left thinking: If only I hadn't broken the barrier here, or what if I didn't get bucked off there? On the other hand, some may be thinking about how thankful they were for a good draw at the right time, or "I can't believe I made that heel shot."

We just couldn't wait to see how the standings would shake up after this event, so we've done our own unofficial standings update to see who made it in, and who needs to win big at Hanna - the last rodeo of the CPRA season.

If you missed round one of the 2018 Grass Roots Final, you missed a lot. Upsets, triumph and the dream is qualifying for the Canadian Finals Rodeo becoming ever-closer to a reality for some, and the door closing for others.

It’s a pressure cooker situation as the competitors of the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association head into their final weekend of competition. We’re down to dollars and cents as competitors that are on the bubble fight to hold their position, and those on the outside looking in lay it all on the line to make the pinnacle event of Canadian rodeo. 

Titles won, Cinderella stories played out, and yes, heartbreak, all come from the Canadian Professional Rodeo Associations Grass Roots Final in Calgary, Alberta this week. Since the event's inauguration in 2014, competitors have made this event a nail-biter for rodeos fans who are keeping their eyes not only on the leaderboard, but more importantly on the Canadian Standings. 

The Grass Roots rodeo circuit consists of 32 CPRA rodeos that have $7,999 or less in added money. Competitors have been working hard all year to get into the top 10 and make it to the Grass Roots Final in Calgary, Alberta where they’ll have a final chance at a big paycheck.

Entries for the Grass Roots Final are taking place today, but — after the final weekend of competition that counts towards those finals at Oldstoberfest — the leaderboard no doubt saw changes. Some competitors will be in and some are unfortunately out of the Grass Roots Final this year and will have to hope they earn enough at the final two regular-season rodeos to qualify for CFR. 

If you have a chip and a chair, you have a chance. That’s what six-time CFR steer wrestling qualifier Baillie Milan says. That’s all you need when you saddle up for this poker game we call rodeo, and it’s the thing that keeps pushing competitors to make the miles in the hopes of qualifying for the ever-evasive “finals” — whichever one that may be.

The rain came pouring down after the first performance of Guy Weadick Days, and the mud soon followed, but that couldn't phase the CPRA competitors that came to compete at the history-filled event.
