Rising Star: Kolby Boyett, 16-Year-Old All-Around Roper

With the increased exposure and dollars going into female roping events, this next FloRodeo Rising Star has a bright and exciting future ahead of her. Sixteen-year-old Kolby Boyett may have started out as an all-around cowgirl, but her passion for the roping events have turned her into an all-around roper.

A look at her upbringing can explain her roping tendencies, though.

“I’ve been a cowgirl my whole life,” said Boyett. “I remember sitting on the fence in a diaper watching my dad and his buddies rope.”

From there, Boyett picked up a rope herself and never looked back. She began competing at local junior rodeos when she was eight and just last year she finished out the season as the No. 4 breakaway roper in the National Little Britches Rodeo Association world title race.

“It’s just my way of life, [it’s] all I’ve ever known,” she said. “I can’t remember a time I didn’t have a rope in my hand.”

The Oklahoma cowgirl now sits in the No. 3 spot in the breakaway roping rank, with plans to qualify once again for the NLBRA finals, along with the, ACRA and WPRA finals.

How did you get started in rodeo?

I started going to Rodeos and jackpots when I was 8 years old. My first rodeo was a youth rodeo in my hometown. I started out doing most of the events barrels, poles, team roping, breakaway and goat tying. My passion is roping so I eventually just started focusing on that.

What are some of your biggest accomplishments to date?

My first year I competed in junior high rodeo 2017 I won the AR state breakaway champion I guess that would be my biggest accomplishment so far. I was 5 th in the world in 2015 in breakaway in the NLBRA and 4th in the world in 2016 in breakaway. This last year I’ve mostly been doing local associations. This year I’m going to focus on trying to make the ACRA finals and the WPRA finals and of course the NLBRA finals.

What do you like to do when you're not competing?

I like to go bowling with my family. I also play basketball I’m a freshman so it’s my first year playing in high school. Mostly I’m practicing and trying to get better in the roping pen.
