The list of 36 drivers is riddled with world titles and resumes that are miles long, but one heat stood out as the one that could be the fastest of the night. See the analysis of heat No. 9 below:

Track Record: Richard Cosgrave 1:12.98 (1993)

WPCA Pro Tour, Presented by GMC: Stop No. 4

Format: Thirty-six drivers race in nine heats each night with the top driver in the four-day aggregate named as the Guy Weadick Days champion.

Heat 9: Current World No. 1 And Returning Guy Weadick Days Champ

Drivers: Evan Salmond, Codey McCurrach, Kurt Bensmiller, Cody Ridsdale

Analysis: They may be saving the best for last on the opening night of Guy Weadick Days. Heat No. 9, the final heat of the night, includes the current No. 1 in the world, the reigning event champion, and all four drivers sit within the top five in the WPCA World Standings.

Evan Salmond drew the No. 1 barrel position for the night and is also the No. 1 driver in the world standings after winning the first event of the tour, the Grande Prairie Stompede, with his time of 5:10.19 on four, earning 210 points.

Salmond went on to place second in Saskatoon (5:11.66 on four) for another 162 points, and while two five-second barrel penalties and one two-second penalty for an outrider missing a barrel throughout the weekend saw him placing down in the No. 29 spot at the last stop in Medicine Hat, he still earned 84 season points to put Salmond at No. 1.

Kurt Bensmiller will hit the track in heat nine tonight as the reigning Guy Weadick Days champion with a time last year of 5:01.77 on four. Bensmiller also sits at No. 3 in the world standings before High River, just 17.5 points behind Salmond and set for barrel three tonight where he could close the gap.

The reigning and two-time world champion knows what it takes to get to the top of the leaderboard and has already shown why he was the world champion with a win at the Saskatoon tour stop in early June with his time of 5:11.55.

Codey McCurrach, the fifth-place driver in the world at the moment, will occupy barrel No. 2. McCurrach has yet to win an event this year but he keeps sneaking his way up the leaderboard with every tour stop.

He placed 12th in Grande Prairie, fourth at Saskatoon, and climbed up to second in the aggregate at Medicine Hat.

There’s another “Cody” in the mix of these four drivers: Cody Ridsdale takes his spot at barrel No. 4. While it’s not the optimum position, Ridsdale has had no problem with winning this year at No. 2 in the world standings.

Performances that saw him finish fifth at Grande Prairie, ninth at Saskatoon and third at Medicine Hat have put Ridsdale within reach of the top position in the world, just 1.5 points behind Salmond.
