Rodeo Recap: Canadian Brotherly Rivalries And 3 Big Payouts

Brotherly rivalries—both by blood brothers and “rodeo brothers”—are heating up in the CPRA, and over $400,000 was paid out by three rodeos south of the border last weekend on this week’s rodeo recap.

Canadian Steer Wrestling: A Weekend Of Brotherhood

Three pairs of steer wrestling brothers took a large chunk of change home for their efforts at Canadian rodeos this past weekend. The Lea Park Rodeo went to the Frank Boys: Derek Frank was 3.8 seconds to win the rodeo in Marwayne, Alberta, and take home $1924.65, while big-brother Dallas was 4.3 to place second and earn $1764.20.

Dallas also split third at the Brooks Kinsmen Rodeo (Brooks, Alberta) to earn $1063.61 while Derek split last place at Brooks for $240.17.

The Rocky Pro Rodeo’s (Rocky Mountain House, Alberta) first-place check of $1751.22 went to Straws Milan with a time of 3.6 seconds, while older brother Tanner picked up seventh and eighth at Brooks for $240.17.

The third set of brothers to earn CPRA money this weekend in the steer wrestling are Cody and Curtis Cassidy. Cody placed second at Rocky with a time of 3.8 and a $1522.80 check, while Curtis earned two checks—eighth place at Rocky for $152.28 and split fifth at Brooks for $651.89.

Sisters, Woodward, And Weatherford Highest Payouts Of PRCA Weekend

Of the nearly 30 PRCA approved events on from June 6-10, the three largest paying rodeos represented over $400,000 in combined payout for PRCA competitors. Those rodeos included the Sisters Rodeo in Sisters, Oregon; the Woodward Elks Rodeo in Woodward, Oklahoma; and the Parker County Sheriffs Posse Frontier Days And PRCA Rodeo in Weatherford, Texas

One of the standout performances of the weekend at those events was back-to-back world champion bareback rider Tim O’Connell’s ride on Beutler and Son Rodeo’s “Black Kat” at Woodward. The pair scored 89 points to win the first-place check of $2,786 against a tough field of competition.

O’Connell matched that effort to also win Weatherford with another 89-point score, this time aboard Pete Carr Ro Rodeo’s Painted River for $1,719.

The largest single check of the weekend went to bronc rider Ryder Wright at Sisters, who made an impressive 88-point ride on Big Bend Rodeo’s Majorhuckleberry to earn a whopping $4,484 in one shot.

The team roping in Weatherford was also an entertaining event to watch for rodeo fans with six sub-five second runs—the fastest of which belonged to Cody Snow and Wesley Thorp who roped their steer in 3.8 and earned $2,929 each.

Green And Elliott: Past Two Canadian Champions Duelling It Out In Bronc Riding

They’re the same age, grew up in the same country, and compete in the same event—what is that they say about iron sharpening iron? With the recent update to the CPRA Standings (to include Grande Prairie, Leduc, Hand Hills and Wildwood) Canadian saddle bronc champions Layton Green and Clay Elliott are in a battle for the season lead.

Green, the 2017 Canadian champion has $10,067.59 in earnings so far in the 2018 season and Elliot, the 2016 Canadian Champion, sits in second with $9,298.47. When the next set of standings are released though, the story will be a little different with Green placing at all three CPRA events this weekend. The Meeting Creek, Alberta, cowboy won the Rocky Pro Rodeo in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta with his score of 84 points aboard Outlaw Buckers 709 Fender Bender, then split fourth at Lea Park Rodeo in Marwayne, Alberta, with a score of 82.5, and fourth at the Brooks Kinsmen Pro Rodeo in Brooks, Alberta, with a 78.5.

Green will add $2,996.85 unofficially to his season earnings for his efforts over the weekend, but you can bet Elliott won’t let him get too far ahead. The two also sit within the top 50 in the PRCA World Standings with Elliott at No. 10 and Green sitting in the 22nd spot.
