Rodeo Recap: Snow Wins Home-State Rodeo, 2 Women's Events At Red Bluff

The Red Bluff Round-Up—with its over $250,000 purse and four-round timed event format—took most of the headlines this past weekend, but there was some extra excitement both at Red Bluff with an added event we're not used to seeing, as well as some unusual names on the all-around titles at some of the smaller PRCA rodeos on Saturday and Sunday.

Home-State Cowboy Cody Snow Wins Red Bluff

Two-time WNFR qualifier Cody Snow has steadily been picking off rodeo wins in his home state since he filled his pro rodeo card. The Los Olivos, California, cowboy has conquered the Oakdale Saddle Club Rodeo, the Grand National Rodeo, the Industry Hills Charity Pro Rodeo, San Dimas Western Days, the Sonoma County Fair Wine Country Rodeo, along with rodeos at Jurupa Valley, Livermore, and Glenville.

Now the young cowboy that is known for his skills as a horseman, he can add the Red Bluff Round-Up to that list after a successful weekend there with his Texas-connection partner Wesley Thorp, who calls Throckmorton, Texas, home. The pair placed fourth in round one, split third and fourth in round two, placed fifth in round three, and picked up the last spot (sixth) in the finals—their efforts earned them the No. 1 spot in the average with a total on four of 29.1.

The pair earned a total of $7,477 each to add to their standings totals; Snow and Thorp currently sit fourth and sixth, respectively, in the PRCA world standings.

Snow also lists the Salinas, California, as his favorite rodeo. Like many pro rodeo competitors, he’ll be hoping to take home that coveted Salinas buckle at some point in his career.

WPRA Sanctions Two Events At Red Bluff: Barrel Racing And Breakaway Roping

The female roping world was pumped when breakaway ropers were able to hit the arena floor for the first time at the Pendleton Round-Up last year. That excitement can continue this year with the Red Bluff Round-Up’s decision to add the event to their roster, sanctioned under the WPRA.

Suzanne Williams from Standish, California, became the first champion of the breakaway roping at Red Bluff with her time of 6.5 on two head.

As a female roper myself—who quit breakaway roping and decided to only team rope after college because of the lack of breakaway roping events I could attend in Canada—this is a huge step forward to the women that would rather spin a rope than around three barrels.

Speaking of barrel racing, though, the ladies of the WPRA put on some nail-biting performances during Red Bluff. Aside from Jessie Telford’s smoking 17.08-second run in round two that was the fastest of the weekend and won the round by 0.22 seconds, times throughout the weekend were just hundredths apart with many ties littering the results.

Rope Bags And Rigging Bags This Weekend For Muncy And DeMoss

There were a few other smaller PRCA events going on this weekend: the Midwest Horse Fair and Rodeo (Madison, Wisconsin), the Wichita Falls PRCA Rodeo (Wichita Falls, Texas), the Longview PRCA Rodeo (Longview, Texas), and the Jesse Andrus and Mike Hillman Memorial (Roswell, New Mexico).

While the checks they won weren’t the biggest of their successful careers, two names stood out for me when looking at the all-around champions this weekend. Taos Muncy, a two-time world champion saddle bronc rider, won the all-around in Roswell while Heith DeMoss, a nine-time WNFR saddle bronc riding qualifier, became the Longview all-around champion.

Neither was able to earn checks in both events, but it was neat to see Muncy and DeMoss throw their names in the hat in the team roping.
