Two Canadian journalists have been nominated for National Newspaper Awards—a Canada-wide award program honoring the best in Canadian Journalism since 1949—for a story on the life of bull riders and the aftermath of Ty Pozzobon’s suicide. Journalists Marty Klinkenberg and Todd Korol received nominations for their collaborative piece that was published in November of 2017 for the Globe and Mail.

“This is a story of tragedy and triumph,” Korol said in a Facebook post. “The story of some of the toughest most amazing athletes I have ever worked with. This is an amazing sport, which I love, and as a journalist I have never been treated better anywhere by anybody.”

Korol was nominated for the award in the Photo Portfolio/Essay category for his part in the story, while Klinkenberg received his nomination under the sports category. Klinkenberg has been nominated for a National Newspaper Award six times previously and has won the award four times.

The story, entitled “Eight Seconds: The Life And Death Of A Cowboy,” is a multi-chapter look into not only the life and unfortunate suicide of talented bull rider Ty Pozzobon, but the realities of the sport of bull riding that each of its competitors faces.
