Could The Next All-Around Title Go To A Roughstock Cowboy?

Could The Next All-Around Title Go To A Roughstock Cowboy?

Shane Proctor has some ground to make up, but the cowboy is on the board for the 2018 all-around title race. We reported on Proctor’s ambitions to win the most coveted world title in rodeo back in early January when the bull rider and current part-time bronc rider announced he would be retiring from the PBR, subsequently setting the goal of winning a PRCA all-around title.

“I have been a good bull rider doing both associations for several years, and now I want to be a great cowboy,” Proctor said to PBR’s Justin Felisko. “I have always wanted to win an all-around title. I figure I will be 33 in March, and I thought, ‘Well my time is starting to run out.’"

Proctor said on social media that he feels like things are getting better with each ride, and a recent Instagram photo shows some technique that isn't too shabby at all. Proctor posted this picture of himself spurring over his bronc rein at the Okeechobee, Florida, PRCA rodeo.

A roughstock competitor hasn’t won the all-around title since Ty Murray’s last championship in 1998. Proctor has some major ground to cover—he’s currently over $50,000 behind reigning all-around champion Tuf Cooper—but after earning the necessary $3,000 in each event ($11,307.88 in the bull riding and $3,160.28 in the saddle bronc riding as of March 20) to qualify for the all-around standings, he has a chance.

Proctor made more than enough money to win the all-around title two years ago, but was just shy of the $3,000 mark in the bronc riding to be eligible for the title. He can rest easy and simply go to work now that he's made that mark in both events in 2018.

Tuf Cooper currently leads the all-around race with $65,666.56 in earnings between his events—see the full list of PRCA all-around standings HERE.
