$40,000 Per Second: The Numbers Of The American

When it comes to numbers, RFD-TV’s The American, presented by Dish goes big: hundreds of contestants spread all over a large area of the U.S., Canada, and even Brazil, and the biggest one-day payout in rodeo.

No one appreciates those large numbers more than the winningest cowboy at The American who — as you'll read below — has earned over $40,000 per second he's spent in the final round.

Here’s a look at how some of those numbers break down at The American in 2018:

2 Millionaires

Bareback rider Richmond Champion became the first millionaire to walk out of the event in 2014, the inaugural year of The American.

The second competitor to win the full million would be three years in the making. Wade Sundell took home the entire million in 2016, not because he was a qualifier but because he won the event three years in a row.

Barrel racer Lisa Lockhart and team roper Kaleb Driggers were also in the running for their third consecutive titles but weren’t able to capture the win.

5 Years

This will be the fifth year The American has taken place. The semifinals will run from February 18 to 24 at the Cowtown Coliseum in Fort Worth, Texas, with the full rounds and shoot-out for the semifinals running the last three days. The finals goes down in Arlington at the AT&T Stadium on February 25.

6.65 Seconds

The time Marty Yates posted to win The American in the tie-down roping in 2017, breaking the arena record that had just been claimed by Cory Solomon in the long round with his 6.71-second run. The longest time that has won The American in the tie down roping was a 7.59 by Reese Riemer in 2015.

19 Returning Champions

There are 19 past champions of The American returning to the event, including two-time American champions Kaleb Driggers and Lisa Lockhart, the original American millionaire Richmond Champion, and reigning saddle bronc champion Cody DeMoss.

Also returning to The American through wins at qualifier events are team roper Patrick Smith; steer wrestlers Hunter Cure, KC Jones, and Clayton Hass; tie-down ropers Tyson Durfey and Hunter Herrin; and bronc rider Wade Sundell. They all had to win their spots through sanctioned qualifiers instead of receiving an invitation.

32 Seconds

The number of seconds it took Wade Sundell to win $1.325 million in the shoot-out rounds of The American the past four years. Sundell earned $100,000 in 2014 and 2015, and then came back in 2016 to win $100,000 plus the $1 million bonus for three consecutive championships at The American, and came up just short of a fourth title last year but still took home $25,000 for second spot.

When you break it down, that's $41,406.25 per second he's spent in the final round — not a bad day job for the wild-man.

45 Exemptions

There were 45 exemptions that earned their way into the semifinal rounds of The American. These competitors come from the College National Finals Rodeo, Junior NFR, National High School Finals Rodeo, Indian National Finals Rodeo, Better Barrel Racing World Finals, the Barretos Bull Riding in Brazil, and the Patriot Young Guns World Championship team roping.

52 World Titles

Fifty-two world titles have been won between The American invites, and there are more within the list of qualifiers. Trevor Brazile easily has the most world titles at 23, along with other multi-time world champions that received an invite including: Sage Kimzey (four), Tuf Cooper (three), Jade Corkill (three), and Clay Tryan (three).

90.5 Points

The highest score recorded in the shoot out round to win The American in the bull riding. J.B. Mauney earned that score in 2014 to take home the first bull riding title for The American.

The mark for highest score for the bareback riding in the shoot-out round is held by two-time world champion Tim O’Connell at 90.25 in 2017, while Wade Sundell posted the highest saddle bronc score in 2014 at 92.5 points.

94 Qualifier Events

There were a total of 94 qualifier events on the roster for the 2018 edition of The American. The qualifiers will join the exemption competitors to battle it out in the semifinal rounds in the hopes of progressing through to the finals on February 25.

Each year about 600 contestants qualify during events throughout North America.

389 WNFR Qualifications

When you look at the list of invites to The American in 2018, there are an impressive 389 WNFR qualifications between them. Top WNFR qualifiers include Trevor Brazile (50), Kory Koontz (21), Clay Tryan (15), Cory Petska (14), and Cody DeMoss (13).

The event with the most WNFR qualifications is the tie-down roping with a total of 98 (including Trevor's qualifications in multiple events), with the team roping also having a deep field of competitors with 74 and 82 qualifications between the headers and heelers, respectively.

$10 Million

The American has paid out more than $10 million to winners of the semifinals and the final rounds of the event in the past four years. In 2018, the semifinals themselves will have a $1 million payout to go with the $2 million in prize money at the finals.
