7 Breakout Stars At Junior NFR

Las Vegas has provided an insane week of rodeo with both Jr. NFR and National Finals Rodeo going down in the Nevada desert. While the pros continue to chase big money at the Thomas & Mack Center, the youngsters who hope to one day fill their boots have been roping and riding to establish themselves as the future of the sport.

And in just the second-ever Jr. NFR, the best of the best are showing up like never before.

The Las Vegas Convention Center is still bustling with Jr. NFR action, but these cowboys and cowgirls have already made their names known in the rodeo arena at Cowboy Christmas. Here’s a look at the seven young stars that have impressed us the most this week.

1. Myles Neighbors | Junior Steer Wrestling

The only sub-4 steer wrestling run of the week belongs to 18-year-old bulldogger Myles Neighbors from Arkansas. Neighbors is an experienced cowboy, having won the first round at March’s Jr. Ironman Championship, and his 3.90 second run sets him up well to fight for the ultimate prize — a world title.

2. Rio Flaharty | Senior Barrel Racing

The Kansas cowgirl leads the Jr. NFR barrel racing average heading into Saturday’s finale, but the fight for the top figures to be a close affair as seven ladies compiled two combined runs of sub-28 seconds.

3. Bradlee Miller | Mini Bull Riding & Bareback Riding

Miller rode his final bull in the 12-13 mini bull short round during the morning of the roughstock championships to the tune of 70.5 points, giving him a total of 215 points to win the title. The young cowboy took a breather, then did it all over again an hour later, this time during the senior bareback riding in spectacular fashion. Miller finished out his Junior NFR with an 86.75 point ride, creating an average score of 81.6667 to win his second world title of the day. Write this name down, we may just have a future PRCA all-around champion in our midst.

4. Jessi Everett | 14-&-Under Breakaway Roping

Everett won the 14-and-under breakaway average heading into championship Saturday, thanks in large part to her stellar 2.21 second run. That roping won the 12-year-old Texan the fast-calf title in Las Vegas to go along with her average buckle.

5. & 6. Luke Williams & Kayden Little | Team Roping

The extra incentive of RFD-TV’s The American qualification was not wasted on header Luke Williams and heeler Kayden Little, who each won team roping world titles at Jr. NFR and subsequently earned tickets to the lucrative Arlington, Texas, rodeo this February. The pair combined to win $19,000 in 2017, and now they’ll face a loaded field at AT&T Stadium with $1 million on the line. Williams and Little will look to familiarize themselves with each other, as the teenagers competed with different partners this week in Las Vegas.

7. Tuker Carricato | Bareback Riding

Carricato may be humble, but his talents were exactly the opposite at the 2017 Junior NFR. Pressure can weigh heavily on young rodeo competitors, and it was mounting as Carricato had to watch every other junior bareback rider compete, his closest competition all posting strong scores. Carricato showed the makings of a champion when he came through with his highest score of the week at 85.75 points, earning him the junior bareback title with an average score of 82.583.
