Sabra O'Quinn has trained and ridden several standout futurity and rodeo horses over the years, and it is safe to say that anything the Ocala, FL, native trains and jockeys is set up for success. That was the case this past weekend at the fourth annual Colorado Classic Futurity in Pueblo, where O'Quinn jockeyed 4-year-old bay stallion Roarrr to the championship in the futurity with a total time on two runs of 32.892 seconds.

Owned by 5L Quarter Horses and Gary Langford of Florida, Roarrr is by Tres Seis and out of NFR qualifier Dash Ta Vanila, who has over $150,000 in lifetime earnings. An injury cut Dash Ta Vanila's career short, having to retire the incomparable mare at only 7 years old. Langford purchased the then-2-year-old, gorgeous stallion from breeder Alan Woodbury and sent him to O'Quinn as an early 3-year-old to begin his barrel racing career. O'Quinn explained that it didn't take long for Roarrr to put it all together, and he showed signs of brilliance from the start.

"He was pretty easy from the start," O'Quinn said. "He is super athletic, very trainable and as sharp as a whip. With those three qualities combined, it is no wonder he is proving to be a fantastic barrel horse."

O'Quinn and Langford had high hopes for Roarrr at the start of the 2017 futurity year, but an injury to the jaw would sideline Roarrr for most of the winter and spring futurities.

"He broke his jaw, so we scaled back and allowed him adequate time to heal," O'Quinn said. "We didn't make it to any of the earlier futurities, but he is making waves now.

Once we brought him back from his injury, it all started coming together, and I told Gary that we needed to make the trip out to Colorado for this futurity and go to as many as Roarrr would allow us to go to.
The Colorado Classic Futurity, which is going on its fourth year, just moved to the Colorado State Fairgrounds in Pueblo this year.

"Kayla Jones did a wonderful job producing this event, and I am excited to come back. Props to her and her team of help," O'Quinn said.

The Colorado Classic has seen its entries grow over its four short years and an increasing number of trainers are taking note of the prestigious event. With some of the top trainers and jockeys in the industry hanging their hats in Pueblo for the weekend, it was no wonder the temperatures weren't the only thing hot in the southern Colorado city over the course of three days. The competition was fierce, and O'Quinn and Roarrr placed second in the first round of the futurity and third in the second round.

"The score was shorter and we hadn't really experienced that before coming to Colorado, so our first barrels weren't as sharp or crisp as they usually are, but Roarrr kept moving through his turns and throughout the entire pattern," O'Quinn said. "He stayed consistent and honest. I am very proud of him!"

The dynamic duo won the futurity average and the average in the Future Fortunes and ended up third in the slot race presented by Lovendahl Performance Horses.
