LAS VEGAS -- In the sport of rodeo, there are two types of royalty -- the cowboys and cowgirls who are legends in the sport and the beautiful young ladies who carry the title of rodeo queen.

On Sunday, Miss Rodeo Texas Lisa Lageschaar was awarded one of rodeo's most sought-after crowns when she was named the 2017 Miss Rodeo America at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.


Before becoming Miss Rodeo Texas, Lageschaar was a high school agriculture teacher, and it was her students who encouraged her to run for the title. Lageschaar has a master's degree in secondary education from Stephen F. Austin State  University and her bachelor's degree in agricultural education from Tarleton State University in Stephenville, TX. After her year as MRA, she plans to pursue her doctorate degree in education.

Lageschaar, whose parents immigrated to Texas from the Netherlands to become dairy farmers in 1990, began competing in rodeo queen contests when she was in junior high. After winning capturing the biggest honor a rodeo queen can achieve, Lageschaar said, "that it hadn't even sank in yet."

Not only is Lageschaar a great ambassador for the sport of rodeo and the agricultural industry, but she is also an accomplished team roper as a header. One of her goals is to win the all-girl team roping championship at the USTRC Finals and to win the World Series of Team Roping.

Along with being crowned the 2017 Miss Rodeo America,  Lageschaar also won the written test, appearance, and personality portions of the pageant.
