Crumrine Crushes Competition at Panty Raid

Crumrine Crushes Competition at Panty Raid

The Panty Raid Futurity is held the first weekend in April at the Champions Center in Springfield, Ohio and was founded by West Salem residents Dawn Shirley and Clea Remington. The event was named after the incredible mare, Famous Silk Panties, to celebrate the impact she had on Ohio and the futurity industry.

This past weekend the Panty Raid saw fierce competition, with veteran futurity trainer Troy Crumrine coming out on top in the 4-year-old BFA Futurity. Crumrine was riding young stallion SR Industry Titan owned by Nick and Tom Wylie of Swanton, Ohio. "Titan" is by Firewaterontherocks and out of the iconic mare, Mulberry Canyon Moon.

"Titan is a big dog but for being a stud, he is pretty quiet and respectful. He is a lot like his mom (Mulberry Canyon Moon). He loves to please you and loves attention," explained Crumrine.

The Panty Raid was Crumrine's first run back since breaking his ankle. He ended up having a plate and 9 screws put in Christmas Day.

"The first round at the Panty Raid was my first run back and my timing was a little off. I thought we were flying to the first barrel and I set him too soon and he shut down quick but thankfully we got around it. I figured out quickly that I wasn't going as fast as I thought we were and trusted him throughout the rest of the run."

"The first go was totally my fault, thinking that something would happen to my ankle. Like a horse that has been injured, it stays in your mind for a while!"

Going into the second round, Crumrine felt more confident and comfortable and let the young stallion do his job to the best of his ability, which was the recipe for success.

"In the second round, I sent him in there and trusted that he knew what he was doing. He worked outstanding and did everything spot on," Crumrine said.

Having made two solid, blistering fast runs was just the outcome Crumrine needed to win the average for the second time at the Panty Raid. Last year he won the average board yet another one of Mulberry's offspring, MCM Ima Sharp Guy.

Dawn, Clea and crew are great people and great to work with. They work hard to put on a great event. I also love that it's not too far from home, so I can travel back and forth on the days that I need to be there and can still catch some of my daughter's softball games at home.

Crumrine has been one of the top trainers in the industry for years and for good reason. When asked what one bit of advice he has learned over the years that he treasures, his answer was that not every horse is going to be a great futurity horse.

"Some horses will make great futurity horses and some will not. It doesn't mean they are not going to be nice open horses. Some horses just take longer to mature and turn into a good one," commented Crumrine.

At the end of the day, Crumrine explains that his main goal is making sure his horses last for the long run.

"Being a futurity trainer, we don't get to keep them long but that doesn't mean we don't want them to last and be successful for whomever has them in the years to come. It is very gratifying to see them go on with other riders and be successful."
